Active online learning: practising HSC Maths Advanced the way markers mark it

A student writing equations across a crowded blackboard
“Mathematics is not about numbers, equations, computations, or algorithms: it is about understanding.” - William Paul Thurston

Having a visual way to explore equations makes a world of difference for a student’s confidence. Good online HSC Maths Advanced tutoring keeps them doing the thinking, with a tutor working alongside them in real time.

In Year 12 Advanced, every session builds toward one thing: a calm, steady rhythm that holds up in long, demanding exams.

Why practising the HSC way helps

Harder Advanced questions often have several parts, and an early slip can carry through. Clear, line-by-line working is what lets your child spot it, and what lets a marker give credit for everything done correctly.

Practising that layout every session means it holds when the pressure is real.

How a session works

Sessions run on Google Meet with a shared digital whiteboard, and Desmos comes in whenever a graph helps.

  1. Check-in: how they’re feeling and what’s coming up in the assessment schedule.
  2. Confirm the foundations: quick questions on the skills the topic depends on.
  3. Work the harder questions: your child drives on the whiteboard, step by step.
  4. Check against the guidelines: for past HSC questions, working is compared with NESA’s marking guidelines.
  5. Review and next steps, written into the shared Google Doc.

How we check it’s landing

Signs it’s working

  • Your child writes every step, including the ones that feel obvious.
  • They catch their own slips before finishing a question.
  • Multi-part questions stay organised from start to end.
  • They work through past papers at a steady pace.

Every session’s notes sit in the shared Google Doc, so you can see what was covered at any time.
