Active online learning: practising HSC Extension 1 maths the way markers mark it

Having a visual way to explore equations makes a world of difference for a student’s confidence. With online HSC Extension 1 maths tutoring, they do the work live on a shared screen instead of watching someone else do it.

Year 12 Extension 1 sessions are built around the hardest part of the course: questions where the method isn’t obvious and the layout matters as much as the answer.

Why practising live helps

In Extension 1, the hard part is usually the first move, and the next hardest is keeping a long argument tidy. Both improve fastest with someone alongside asking the right question at the right moment.

How a session works

Sessions run on Google Meet with a shared digital whiteboard, and Desmos comes in whenever a graph helps.

  1. Check-in: how they’re feeling and what’s coming up in the assessment schedule.
  2. Confirm the foundations: quick questions on the Advanced skills the topic relies on.
  3. Attempt first: your child starts a harder question and talks through their plan.
  4. Work through it together: the tutor asks questions to unlock the next step, and your child writes every line.
  5. Check against the guidelines: for past HSC questions, the layout is compared with NESA’s marking guidelines.
  6. Review and next steps, written into the shared Google Doc.

How we check it’s landing

Signs it’s working

  • Your child’s proofs include every structural step.
  • They start unfamiliar questions with a plan.
  • Silly mistakes are caught in checking.
  • Past HSC papers feel demanding but manageable.

Every session’s notes sit in the shared Google Doc, so you can see what was covered at any time.
