The best sign that tutoring is working is when the same old mistakes stop turning up. Regular one-on-one Year 8 maths tutoring gives you a clear view of that, plus someone checking in on how your child is actually going.
In Year 8, most marks are lost to negative number slips and moving too quickly to write each step down. So that’s where we look for progress first.
What progress looks like in Year 8 maths
| Area | Where many students start | What we count as progress |
|---|---|---|
| Negative numbers | Signs dropped or flipped inside algebra | Sign slips disappearing from tests and homework |
| Written working | Two or three steps squeezed into one line, or done in the head | One step per line, every time, without being reminded |
| Checking | Moving on as soon as an answer appears | Substituting equation answers back in before moving on |
| Confidence | Confident enough to rush | Confident enough to slow down |
We count a habit as fixed when your child gets those questions right consistently, without prompting, and in their school tests.
How we measure it
The starting point. Every student begins with a free 30-minute intro session, where the tutor learns how your child feels about school, the marks they’ve been getting and the marks they’d like, what they’re working towards, and the rhythm of their week. A few example questions on upcoming topics show exactly where they’re sitting.
Session notes by topic. After every session, the tutor’s notes in the shared Google Doc record the topics you worked on and how your child went with each one. Read across a term, those notes show which slips keep coming back and which have stopped.
When the notes on a topic stop mentioning sign slips or skipped steps, and your child’s school tests say the same, that habit is fixed.
Every session. Each session opens with a check-in on how your child is feeling and a look back at the last session’s notes, and closes with a review and next steps in the shared doc.
The tracker page and termly check-ins. The top of the shared Google Doc holds recent marks, tutor comments, confidence, and your child’s check-in interview answers. The interview is repeated at the start and end of each term.
What you’ll see, and when
| When | What happens | What you’ll see |
|---|---|---|
| Before the first session | Intro interview and example questions | A clear starting point for marks, confidence and goals |
| After every session | Review and next steps | Notes and next steps in the shared Google Doc |
| Every few weeks | Session notes are read back across topics | Which slips have stopped appearing |
| End of term | The check-in interview, repeated | This term’s marks and confidence beside last term’s |
An honest note: slowing down can make homework feel longer for a few weeks, and some students push back on writing every step. That’s normal, and it usually passes once they see the slips disappearing from their tests.
Signs of progress you’ll notice at home
- Their homework shows every step written out.
- They check answers without being asked.
- Tests come home with fewer “silly mistake” comments.
- They’re less frustrated by maths, even when it’s hard.
