Developing a clear, persuasive voice in essay writing requires personal encouragement and careful guidance. A Year 11 English Advanced tutor in Sydney can spot exactly where a response goes off track and show them a clearer way through it.
The new English Advanced 11–12 Syllabus (2024) has been taught to Year 11 since 2026. The step up from Year 10 is in the complexity of the texts: deeper themes, and those themes presented in more complex ways.
What makes Year 11 English Advanced harder
Advanced texts ask more of a reader. A novel like Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, for example, explores ambition, responsibility and isolation, through a story told in layers by different narrators and shaped by the science and Romanticism of its time.
With texts like that, students are tempted to write about everything at once. As responses get longer and ideas get bigger, the basics of a strong paragraph are often the first thing to slip.
The basics that still win marks in Year 11 Advanced
| Part of the paragraph | What it needs to do | A question to check it |
|---|---|---|
| Point (topic sentence) | Argue something outside the text, about the author’s purpose or the world | Is this about what the author is doing, or only what happens? |
| Evidence | A short, precise quote or reference | Is the quote doing work, or just decoration? |
| Explain | Name the technique and show exactly how it creates the effect | Have I explained how, as well as what? |
| Link | Connect back to the thesis and the question | Does this paragraph prove part of my argument? |
For example, the Creature’s warning, “Beware; for I am fearless, and therefore powerful,” can support a point about how Shelley shows the danger of creating something and then abandoning responsibility for it. The marks come from explaining exactly how the line does that.
How we build analysis on complex texts in an online session
Every student starts with a free 30-minute intro session, where the tutor learns how your child is feeling about school, the marks they’ve been getting and want to get, what they’re working towards, and the rhythm of their week.
Sessions run on Google Meet, and for English the main tool is a shared Google Doc. Your child writes, then they and the tutor review it together, checking each paragraph against the four parts above as the responses get longer.
How to check a long Advanced response before handing it in
- Every topic sentence argues outside the text.
- Every paragraph has all four parts: point, evidence, explain, link.
- Each technique is named and its effect is explained explicitly.
- The complexity is in the ideas, while the sentences stay clear.
- The conclusion answers the question, using the thesis.
