How we track progress in Year 11 Maths Advanced: keeping the foundations firm

In Year 11 Maths Advanced, small gaps in the foundations can quietly undo a lot of good work on new topics. One-on-one Year 11 Maths Advanced tutoring lets us track both, and adjust well before assessment pressure builds.

Year 11 results don’t count directly towards the ATAR, but the understanding built this year is exactly what Year 12 Advanced assumes. So we track the foundations as closely as the new content.

What progress looks like in Year 11 Maths Advanced

Area Where many students start What we count as progress
Indices, surds and logs Rules half-remembered from Year 10 Using them automatically, in any direction
Calculus Applying differentiation rules without knowing what they mean Explaining what a derivative tells you, with a sketch
Functions and graphs Plotting points to see a shape Predicting a graph’s shape and transformations from its rule
Keeping up A missed week shows up a month later Homework done consistently, topic by topic

How we measure it

The starting point. Every student begins with a free 30-minute intro session, where the tutor learns how your child feels about school, the marks they’ve been getting and the marks they’d like, what they’re working towards, and the rhythm of their week.

Session notes by topic. After every session, the tutor’s notes in the shared Google Doc record the topics you worked on and how your child went with each one. Read across a term, they show whether a slip is a calculus gap or a foundations gap, and whether it’s closing.

The tracker page and termly check-ins. The top of the shared Google Doc holds recent marks, tutor comments, confidence, and your child’s check-in interview answers. The interview is repeated at the start and end of each term.

We count a skill as secure when your child gets it right consistently, without prompting, and in their school assessments.

What you’ll see, and when

When What happens What you’ll see
Before the first session Intro interview A clear starting point for marks, confidence and goals
After every session Review and next steps Notes and next steps in the shared Google Doc
Across the term Session notes read back by topic Which foundations are secure and which keep resurfacing
End of term The check-in interview, repeated This term’s marks and confidence beside last term’s

An honest note: the jump from Year 10 to Advanced can knock a student’s confidence early in Year 11, even when they’re capable. A dip in the first term is common, and the tracker helps you see whether it’s levelling out.

Signs of progress you’ll notice at home

  • Homework gets done steadily, without a pile-up before tests.
  • They can explain a calculus idea to you in plain words.
  • Test feedback mentions fewer algebra slips.
  • They’re more confident choosing Year 12 maths.
