How we track progress in Year 11 Extension 1 maths: algebra that holds under pressure

In Extension 1, it’s easy to look fine on routine questions and still be underprepared for the hard ones. One-on-one Year 11 Extension 1 maths tutoring lets us track the difference and adjust well before assessment pressure builds.

Year 11 results don’t count directly towards the ATAR, but Year 12 Extension 1 and Extension 2 build straight on this year. We track the foundations that Year 12 will lean on.

What progress looks like in Year 11 Extension 1

Area Where many students start What we count as progress
Algebra Expanding and factorising correct, but slow or error-prone Fast, accurate algebra, including polynomials
Calculus understanding Rules applied mechanically Explaining what a derivative means and choosing the right method
Harder questions Skipping or stalling on unfamiliar problems Starting them confidently and getting partway or all the way
Consistency Strong one week, shaky the next Getting tricky questions right regularly, without prompting

How we measure it

The starting point. Every student begins with a free 30-minute intro session, where the tutor learns how your child feels about school, the marks they’ve been getting and the marks they’d like, what they’re working towards, and the rhythm of their week. For Extension 1, that includes whether they’re considering Extension 2 in Year 12.

Session notes by topic. After every session, the tutor’s notes in the shared Google Doc record the topics you worked on and how your child went with each one, including the harder questions. Read across a term, they show which skills are reliable and which still wobble.

The tracker page and termly check-ins. The top of the shared Google Doc holds recent marks, tutor comments, confidence, and your child’s check-in interview answers. The interview is repeated at the start and end of each term.

What you’ll see, and when

When What happens What you’ll see
Before the first session Intro interview A starting point for marks, confidence and Year 12 maths goals
After every session Review and next steps Notes and next steps in the shared Google Doc
Across the term Session notes read back by topic Which skills hold up on hard questions
End of term The check-in interview, repeated This term’s marks and confidence beside last term’s

An honest note: strong maths students sometimes find Extension 1 humbling at first, because it’s the first time maths doesn’t come easily. That’s normal, and working through it is exactly what prepares them for Year 12.

Signs of progress you’ll notice at home

  • They spend time on hard questions instead of skipping them.
  • They talk about why a method works.
  • Test feedback mentions fewer algebra errors.
  • They have a clear view on whether Extension 2 is right for them.
