Preparing for Extension 2 in Year 11: the algebra that has to be rock solid

A dark blackboard filled with dense working
“Mathematics, rightly viewed, possesses not only truth, but supreme beauty.” - Bertrand Russell

Finding your footing in the hardest senior maths course takes patience and clear, encouraging feedback. Time with a patient Year 11 Extension 2 maths tutor in Sydney turns small gaps into careful habits they can rely on.

If your child is aiming for Extension 2, Year 11 is the year that decides how ready they’ll be. The course itself starts in Year 12, but it’s built entirely on what they learn now.

How Extension 2 works, and what Year 11 needs to cover

Under NSW rules, students must study both Year 11 Mathematics Advanced and Year 11 Mathematics Extension 1 before starting Extension 2, which is a Year 12 course. So there’s no separate Extension 2 content in Year 11.

What there is, is foundations. Gaps in the Advanced and Extension 1 algebra compound in Year 12 Extension 2, where every question assumes that algebra is automatic.

Year 11 foundation From Why Extension 2 depends on it
Expanding and factorising, including polynomials Advanced and Extension 1 Almost every Extension 2 question involves heavy algebraic manipulation
Indices, surds and logs Advanced Simplifying expressions quickly and exactly
Trigonometric identities Advanced and Extension 1 Harder proofs and calculus build on them
Understanding derivatives Advanced Year 12 calculus goes much further
Inequalities Extension 1 Proof and harder algebra rely on them

How we prepare Year 11 students for Extension 2

Every student starts with a free 30-minute intro session, where the tutor learns how your child is feeling about school, the marks they’ve been getting and want to get, what they’re working towards, and the rhythm of their week. For students aiming at Extension 2, that conversation covers whether it’s the right fit as well as how to get ready.

Sessions run on Google Meet with a shared digital whiteboard, and Desmos comes in whenever a graph helps. The focus is consistent practice on the tricky questions in Advanced and Extension 1, so harder problems feel familiar instead of frightening.

How to tell if your child is ready for Extension 2

A readiness check by the end of Year 11

  • Algebra is fast and accurate, including cubics and harder factorising.
  • Your child regularly attempts the hardest questions in their Extension 1 work, and gets many of them out.
  • They can explain why methods work, as well as use them.
  • They enjoy, or at least don’t dread, being stuck on a hard problem for a while.
  • Their Extension 1 results are strong and steady across the year.

If most of these are true, Extension 2 is likely a good fit. If not, there’s time in Year 11 to close the gaps, or to choose Extension 1 alone with confidence.
