Having a visual way to explore equations makes a world of difference for a student’s confidence. Online Year 11 Extension 2 maths tutoring works best when it’s active: shared whiteboards, live questions and a tutor who can see their working as it happens.
Preparing for Extension 2 is mostly about one habit: doing hard questions, consistently, until they stop feeling hard. Sessions are built around that.
Why hard problems need a different kind of session
In Extension 2, the challenge is rarely a missing formula. It’s knowing how to start, staying with a problem when the first idea doesn’t work, and keeping the algebra clean over many lines.
Those skills only develop through practice on genuinely difficult questions, with someone alongside who can tell the difference between a student who needs a hint and one who just needs more time.
How a session works
Sessions run on Google Meet with a shared digital whiteboard, and Desmos comes in whenever a graph helps. Your child can write on an iPad or type and draw with a mouse.
- Check-in: how they’re feeling and what’s coming up in Advanced and Extension 1.
- Set the focus: the topics where harder questions are still shaky.
- Attempt first: your child starts a difficult question alone, thinking out loud.
- The smallest useful hint: when they’re stuck, the tutor asks a question that unlocks the next step, without giving the method away.
- Review the approach: what worked, what didn’t, and what to try first next time.
- Next steps, written into the shared Google Doc.
Over time, the hints get smaller and the stretches of independent work get longer. That’s exactly the shift Extension 2 asks for.
How we check it’s landing
Signs it’s working
- Your child stays with a hard problem for longer before asking for help.
- They try more than one approach when the first one stalls.
- Their algebra stays accurate over long, multi-line working.
- They’re starting to enjoy the challenge.
Every session’s notes sit in the shared Google Doc, so you can see what was covered at any time.
