How we track readiness for Year 12 Extension 2 maths

Choosing Extension 2 is a big decision, and it helps to base it on evidence. One-on-one Year 11 Extension 2 maths tutoring lets us track your child’s readiness through the year and adjust well before Year 12 begins.

Because Extension 2 starts in Year 12, what we track in Year 11 is readiness: how secure the foundations are, and how your child handles hard problems.

What readiness looks like

Area Where many students start What we count as ready
Algebra Accurate on routine questions, slower on long ones Fast, accurate and clean over many lines
Hard problems Stalls when the first approach doesn’t work Tries another approach and keeps going
Independence Needs frequent hints Works through most of a hard problem alone
Consistency Strong on good days Strong Advanced and Extension 1 results across the year

How we measure it

The starting point. Every student begins with a free 30-minute intro session, where the tutor learns how your child feels about school, the marks they’ve been getting and the marks they’d like, what they’re working towards, and the rhythm of their week.

Session notes by topic. After every session, the tutor’s notes in the shared Google Doc record the topics you worked on and how your child handled the harder questions. Read across a term, they show whether hints are getting smaller and independent work is growing.

The tracker page and termly check-ins. The top of the shared Google Doc holds recent marks, tutor comments, confidence, and your child’s check-in interview answers. The interview is repeated at the start and end of each term.

What you’ll see, and when

When What happens What you’ll see
Before the first session Intro interview A starting point, including whether Extension 2 is the goal
After every session Review and next steps Notes on the hard questions attempted and how they went
Across the term Session notes read back Whether independence on hard problems is growing
Before Year 12 choices The year’s notes and results, read together An honest view on whether Extension 2 suits your child

An honest note: Extension 2 isn’t the right choice for every strong maths student, and choosing Extension 1 alone is a perfectly good outcome. Our aim is that whichever your child chooses, they choose it with confidence and evidence.

Signs of progress you’ll notice at home

  • They talk about a hard problem they worked out.
  • Long homework questions no longer end in frustration.
  • Their Advanced and Extension 1 marks hold steady or rise.
  • They’re clear about why they do, or don’t, want Extension 2.
